Wi-Fi QR codes — the complete setup guide for guests

A Wi-Fi QR on the wall of your café, salon, or Airbnb lets guests join without reading out a password. This guide covers the generation, the physical-only exposure rule, and how to isolate the guest network from your business devices.

Why use a QR code

No more reading passwords aloud

Store owners and Airbnb hosts stop having to recite credentials. One printed QR replaces every guest login conversation.

Long passwords stop being a problem

Secure passwords (20+ chars, mixed character sets) are nearly impossible to type from spoken dictation. A QR carries them perfectly — security and convenience both improve.

Guest network isolation becomes practical

Issue a separate SSID for guests, rotate its password monthly, and the business network stays independent of what guests do. The QR makes rotation feasible because printing an A6 card is trivial.

Step by step

  1. Understand the Wi-Fi QR format

Wi-Fi QRs encode a string like WIFI:T:WPA;S:SSID;P:password;; — iOS and modern Android cameras parse this and offer one-tap join.

  2. Set up a guest SSID

In your router admin, enable the guest network feature. Pick a strong password; the QR carries it so length doesn't hurt usability.

  3. Generate the Wi-Fi QR

Use qifi.org or a similar free Wi-Fi QR generator (qr.paps.jp is URL-only today; Wi-Fi QR support is on the roadmap).

  4. Print and post

A6 or larger. Entry area, waiting room, inside guest rooms — somewhere a guest looks naturally. Include the SSID in plain text under the QR.

  5. Rotate the password periodically (optional)

Monthly for high-traffic venues. Per-stay for Airbnb. Reprint the QR card each cycle.

Tips from the field

Frequently asked

Q. Can I make a Wi-Fi QR on qr.paps.jp?

A. Not today — qr.paps.jp handles URL shortening and page-level QR codes. For a Wi-Fi QR, use qifi.org or a similar free tool. Wi-Fi QR support is on the roadmap.

Q. Is a Wi-Fi QR safe to post?

A. Posted inside the venue, only physical visitors can scan it. Never publish Wi-Fi QRs online — a Wi-Fi QR on a public web page is a credential leak.

Q. Do I need a separate guest network?

A. Yes, strongly recommended. Most routers (Buffalo, NEC, ASUS, modern Google Nest) have a guest-network toggle. Guest isolation limits the blast radius if credentials ever leak.
